What is ESET Internet Security?
ESET is a well-established name from the realm of antivirus software, even though it’s famous for its business anti-malware suites.
If you purchase directly from ESET’s site, ESET Internet Security prices #40. If you would like pure antivirus with no sandboxed browser and network security checking tools, you can get ESET NOD32 Antivirus for #29.99 annually, while ESET Smart Security Premium comes in at #49.99 and provides a password manager and file encryption utility.
All these rates are for one device for a single year, which makes it among the most expensive consumer transportation goods around. You are also unlikely to find significantly cheaper retail versions, but there are no hidden costs or cost hikes for renewals.
ESET Internet Security — Characteristics, set-up and usability
At install time, ESET provides you remarkably granular control over what information it sends back. You may also allow the detection of potentially unwanted programs which, while not malware, may adversely affect the performance or behavior of your system.
Once you first open it, ESET Internet Security also offers to trigger two of its additional utilities: parental controls to filter out possibly unsuitable online content and monitor the activity of specific user accounts. You will want an ESET online account to use the latter.
Unlike the majority of its rivals, ESET discovered that our system was defined as people within Windows and handicapped its integrated firewall at install time in order to avoid knocking your network connectivity. Rather, it prompted us to make appropriate rules before triggering its own firewall, for example to permit our RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) connection through.
The firewall interface makes it effortless to set principles and configure zones, and contains learning and interactive modes that enable you to make rules as you go, but it sticks with industry-standard language and ports, instead of the per-application version used by several consumer anti-malware suites.
Other tools include a safe browser to help protect your online banking activities, a connected home network monitor to scan and notify you of any possible vulnerabilities, webcam security, and performance-optimized gamer mode.
ESET’s core antivirus features include real-time and on-demand scans, in addition to scheduled scans — concealed in the Tools section of the Tools tab. You will also find system monitoring and optimization tools. A rescue disk image is available for everyone to download free of ESET’s website, but is not built into the ESET client.
ESET Internet Security – Performance
Regrettably, ESET’s antivirus engine is not as widely tested as some competitions, so we’re having to rely on two sets of high quality results from SE Labs and AV-Comparatives. ESET got a perfect score in the SE Labs real-world live malware vulnerability tests and protected against all risks, without the misidentification of legitimate applications.
However, in AV-Comparatives’ real-world evaluations, it just protected against 98.3percent of threats, in contrast to Windows Defender’s 100%, although it did considerably better than Defender on the false positives front, with only a single misidentification.
Should I buy ESET Internet Security?
ESET Internet Security delivers excellent performance and a high level of control over how it functions, and provides buyers extras such as parental controls and device monitoring.
ESET has the cleverest firewall we have encountered during these evaluations and its attributes and options are silent, competent and easy to work with. However, it is more expensive than many of its rivals, and does not come with extras like a VPN support, password manager or cloud copies.
There is no getting round the fact that it is pricey, and as you do mainly get what you pay for, some might not want (or have the ability to) shell out for this.
